Shrub Syrup Class with "Cooking for Health", City of Lenexa

  • Lenexa Rec Center Classroom 17201 West 87th Street Parkway Lenexa, KS, 66219 United States (map)

Join us for the first of many monthly classes we will be teaching in the “Cooking for Health” series hosted by the City of Lenexa. This month, I will be teaching how to make a blueberry shrub syrup, infused with herbs and spices, to create your very own cocktails and mocktails. Shrubs are a great way to sneak some gut health in to your beverages, as they include apple cider vinegar, antioxidants, and health benefits from the herbs. I will show you the various stages of production, and the best way to do it to get the most robust flavors. Most of the shrub syrup recipes you see online are fast, using heat from the stovetop. Here, we use the “slow food” technique of cold maceration, to break down the cell walls of the blueberries to release more robust flavors than you could ever get from a quick method. Easy kitchen science!
